Fig Tree Propagations April 2026 and July 2026

April 12, 2026 (Originally posted on NextDoor)

Trying my hand at fig tree propagation. I have a common fig tree given to me many years ago. After trimming this year, decided to plant cuttings. Cut each section below a sprouting node. Used a sharp knife and cut through the bark in several places at the base of the cuttings. Coated the cut ends in powdered growth hormone. Planted each in small pots placed in plastic shoe box lined with mulch. Wet soil and placed under clear tote to maximize heat to support new root growth. Fingers crossed!

June 1, 2026 (Update)

Fig propagations have exceeded expectations! I, however, have not done a great job in taking more photos to show how things are going. Out of 11 total propagations, 6 have produced new leaves. All but one of those have been given away to people in the neighborhood or in the gardening club. I'll add another photo soon of the fig propagation I'm keeping. I will transplant it in a more permanent planter until next year allowing it to get bigger and survive the winter. Will be 2-3 years before it will be large enough to product figs.

Fig propagations - some with new leaf growth

Baby figs on mature tree. Figs will not ripen off the tree, so must be fully ripened before removing.  Figs will be a rose-mauve color when ripe.  Trick is to remove the figs before the birds know the fruit is ripe.🤣

Update:  7-11-2026  Fig Tree Propagations

Propagations going great!  All but one has new leaves.

Figs on existing tree

The remaining propagation from first batch -- doing great.

Propagations from green new growth on fig tree.  Let these stay tall and cut the top leaves.

All of these were from green new growth on fig tree.  Only one has not produced leaves.
